Costa Rica Market Snapshot

As 2019 draws to a close, Tutela looks into the performance of mobile operators in Costa Rica.

Between August 1st and October 31st 2019, Kolbi ICE had the highest Excellent Consistent Quality percentage of 67.3%, which looks at different use cases to identify the quality of each connection - including video streaming. Kolbi ICE also had the fastest download and upload speed for this period, with 10.6 ms and 4.3 ms respectively.

Kolbi ICE dominates Consistent Quality

Kolbi ICE has the highest Excellent Consistent Quality percentage in Costa Rica with 67.3% and easily reaches the 90% threshold for Core Consistent Quality at 95.0%. With a rather large difference of 21.1%, Movistar is in second place with an Excellent Consistent Quality percentage of 46.2% but also manages to reach the Core Consistent Quality threshold with 92.8%. Claro rounds out the top three with 38.5% Excellent Consistent Quality and 85.6% Core.

Kolbi ICE has strong lead on download speeds

Kolbi ICE is again in first place with a healthy lead over the countries other operators in regards to transfer speeds, with 10.6 Mbps download speed and 4.3 Mbps upload speed. Movistar has a download speed of 6.4 Mbps and 3.3 Mbps upload. Claro is in third place with 4.1 Mbps download speed and 3.3 Mbps upload speed.

Kolbi ICE latency performs best on 4G network

For latency, Kolbi ICE takes out the top spot on the 4G network but the margin is much closer compared to consistent quality and speed tests. Kolbi ICE has a latency of 49.3 ms on 4G, followed by Claro at 52.0 ms and Movistar at 53.3 ms.

In regards to the 3G network, Claro came first with 58.9 ms, Kolbi ICE at 60.0 ms and Movistar in third with 62.4 ms.

Italy - State Of Mobile Networks

2019 has been a year of major change for the Italian wireless world. In the last 12 months, we’ve seen the launch of commercial 5G networks from TIM and Vodafone, the rapid growth of a challenger network, and aggressive promotional activities that are driving more mobile data consumption than ever before.

At a time when established operators are transitioning between network technologies, and new wireless networks are being built out at a rapid pace, the quality of user experience becomes more important than ever.

In this State of Mobile Networks report, global independent mobile data company Tutela uses tens of millions of speed tests and billions of mobile measurements to better understand how mobile networks are functioning for real-world paying subscribers. Tutela has conducted over 20 million speed tests, 311 million latency tests, and 1.9 billion total mobile records from over 1.4 million mobile subscribers in Italy, with records gathered from May 1st to October 31st, 2019.

Australia & New Zealand Cities Report

Australia and New Zealand continue to make waves in the telecom industry with both countries taking interest in implementing technologies with 5G at the helm. Recently, Spark New Zealand started a live 5G trial for the sailing team, Emirates New Zealand, to test out on the Auckland Harbour waters, enabling the team to send back key data in real-time to their engineers and designers. In Australia, Telstra has announced steps to turn off its 3G network in June 2024 to better utilise spectrum for 5G services.

In Tutela’s State of Mobile Networks report for Australia and New Zealand, Australia dominated at a country level in all metrics tested. Telstra was the top operator for Australia, whilst in New Zealand, 2degrees outperformed the other operators in four out of the five metrics tested despite being a relatively new entrant.

To see how the nationwide carriers on the 3G and 4G networks performed in the top 5 most populated cities of Australia and top 5 most populated cities of New Zealand, Tutela has collected and analyzed over 10 million speed tests and 133 million latency tests between April 1st and September 30th 2019.

Key findings:

Adelaide is the top city in Tutela’s testing, with the highest overall Excellent Consistent Quality percentage of 88.8%. Adelaide also has the fastest median download speed at 26.8 Mbps
Telstra continues its nationwide winning streak, and is the top operator in all 5 Australian cities for Excellent Consistent Quality
2degrees outperforms other operators in four of the five cities, with Wellington the only city in New Zealand to have Spark as its top operator
Sydney, the most populated city in Australia, comes in last place for Australia and 5th overall with an Excellent Consistent Quality percentage of 86.1%
Tauranga comes in last place overall with an Excellent Consistent Quality percentage of 77.2%, 11.6% behind Adelaide, and the slowest median download speed at 13.1 Mbps.

Consistent Quality

To more objectively evaluate when networks are (and are not) enabling users to do those things, Tutela has developed a standard called consistent quality. Simply put, it’s two sets of thresholds, called Excellent and Core. If a connection hits the Excellent standard, it’s sufficient for the most demanding mobile use-cases, like HD group video calling or 1080p video streaming. A Core connection is good enough for SD video streaming, web browsing, emails, and VOIP calling, but users are more likely to experience delays or buffering when trying to use more demanding apps. Tutela bases the threshold values on the minimum performance requirements published by popular apps. We most recently updated our Consistent Quality threshold on September 1st, 2019.

Tutela’s consistent quality metric, as used in our reports, simply measures the percentage of time that users can hit the thresholds. The higher the number, the more often users have a Core or Excellent quality connection.

Benelux - State Of Mobile Networks

Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg all finished within the top 10 in Tutela’s recent global ranking of mobile experience, cementing the Benelux region’s status as a global powerhouse in mobile network excellence. Although the three countries finished near each other for Excellent Consistent Quality, Tutela’s signature metric for mobile experience, some significant differences are revealed when looking at the region operator-by-operator.

Belgian subscribers are amongst the lowest users of data in Europe as it currently stands, but their appetite is growing quickly: Orange Belgium’s launch of unlimited plans led to a 77% growth in mobile data last year, according to consultancy tefficient.

To better understand Benelux’s mobile networks, and how they perform from the consumer’s perspective, Tutela has collected and analyzed 1.4 billion records, including over 13 million speed tests and 165 million latency measurements, from over 3.8 million devices (iOS and Android smartphones) between April 1st to 30th September 2019.
